Yahoo-AOL Merger Agreement to Take Place This Month

While Yahoo shares dropped to a five-year low of $15.31 — or about half the price Microsoft offered to pay for the company back in February — on Monday, it has been rumored that the company merger with AOL will probably take place by the end of October, to rescue the company from what, also given the delay in the much-awaited advertising deal with Google, is certainly a bad moment for the entire company.

Today, the Ask.com (formerly AskJeeves.com) search engine announced a completely renovated search algorithm for its U.S. version, with the internationalized updates to come within the end of the month. Ask.com spokesmen declared that the product is now significantly faster, more reliable, and bringing more relevant results than ever, meaning they are confident their market share will soon grow to contrast the Google dominance.

Google recently added new interesting features in the English version of it Blog Search tool, with the same changes reportedly reaching its international counterparts in the next few days. Features include grouping by topic and indicating the number of blogs featuring similar news, adopting a technology very similar to that of the more popular Google News. Even better, the search tool now also features a graph plotting the number of blog posts on any given topic during the last few hours.

Early Internet companies had funny ways of presenting advertising technology to audiences, lulling them into a false sense of security. As the Web grew, the Internet began using targeted online advertising that accounted for a reduction in the amount of privacy that users were accustomed to. Continue reading to see how this phenomenon decreased our online confidentiality one step at a time.

Today Google.org, the philanthropic arm of Google, has unveiled a $4.4 trillion plan dubbed "Clean Power by 2030" that, according to its creators, has the potential to significantly decrease the U.S. dependency on oil and fossil fuels while allowing for an estimated $1 trillion in profits before the program comes to an end in 2030.

In an effort to increase their market share in the very competitive search engine business, Microsoft just launched SearchPerk, a program awarding regular Live Search and Internet Explorer users with perks and prizes. The initiative, while not being the first of its kind, is facing mixed reviews from the press, which is not completely confident that such a program could have a tangible effect in the long term.

TechCrunch and Search Engine Journal recently reported that Yahoo might be selling its "Answers" platform as a part of an effort to get rid of their non-core assets in sight of the possibly upcoming AOL merger agreement. However, Yahoo representatives soon contacted the site webmasters to point out that there are currently no such plans, to the relief of thousands of users around the world.

Sales are down for many businesses due to the slow economy. Business owners and CEOs are looking for that one thing
that can pull them through the hard times and keep them afloat. When times get tough, many turn to SEO, hoping that it
will be the ticket to increased sales. While SEO is almost always a good idea, if you're counting on it to
save a failing business, you may want to rethink things.

Just a few days ago, Google launched its newest Web application, "Google Moderator". The tool, which was initially developed to decide which questions to ask during the many talks given at its Mountain View headquarters, is peculiar in that it exports social bookmarking even to this domain, and has recently been released to the public for free.
